In ODI cricket, fifty hat-tricks have been taken by bowlers to date. In men’s ICC Cricket World Cup history, there have been just 11 instances of a bowler achieving this feat.

  • Former India pacer Chetan Sharma was the first to take a World Cup hat-trick. He did this against New Zealand in the 1987 edition.
  • Sri Lanka's Chaminda Vaas took a hat-trick with the first three balls of an ODI in the World Cup. He did this against Bangladesh in the 2003 edition.
  • Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga is the only man who has taken two hat-tricks in World Cup history.
  • Pakistan's Saqlain Mushtaq and South Africa's JP Duminy are the only spinners who have taken hat-tricks in World Cup history.
