Records: Highest Successful Run Chases In Test Matches

Batting on a day five pitch is always a challenge for any team, and most of the time, it is the bowling team that comes out on top in these conditions. 4th innings chases are tough, and when the target is more than 350 it is almost impossible. Yet, they are a few teams that have successfully pulled off run chases on day five. 

Let's take a look at the top five highest successful run chases in test matches: 

1) West Indies vs Australia, 2003: 

In the 4th test match of Australia's tour of the West Indies in 2003, the hosts were set a target of 418 runs, and they obliged. West Indies created history by chasing 418 runs courtesy of brilliant centuries by Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan. 

2) Australia vs South Africa, 2008: 

In the 1st test between Australia and South Africa at Perth, the hosts set up a target of 414. The South Africans chased down the massive total with six wickets in hand. All the batters except opener Neil McKenzie scored at least fifty runs in that chase while Graeme Smith and AB De Villiers struck centuries. 

3) England vs Australia, 1948:

In the 4th Ashes test at Leeds, Australia was given a target of 404 runs by England. The visitors had a cakewalk to the target as they chased down the total with seven wickets in hand. Arthur Norris smashed 182 runs while Don Bradman finished the game not out on 173. 

4) West Indies vs India, 1976: 

In the 3rd test of India's tour to the West Indies, the visitors were set a target of 403 runs. On the back of centuries from Sunil Gavaskar and Gundappa Viswanath, India chased down the massive total with six wickets in hands.

5) Bangladesh vs West Indies, 2021:

In the recently held series between West Indies and Bangladesh in Bangladesh, the visitors chased down 395 runs. The hero for West Indies was debutant Kyle Mayers who smashed a double ton on a turning track. He got support from Nkrumah Bonner who hit 86.
