IPL Stats: List Of Orange Cap Winners 2008-2021

IPL Stats & Records - The 15th season of the Indian Premier League kicked off as IPL 2021 runners-up Kolkata Knight Riders defeated defending champions Chennai Super Kings in the first match on March 26th. 

In every season of the Indian Premier League, the highest run-scorer is awarded an Orange Cap. Throughout the tournament, the highest run-scorer wears an Orange Cap and the cap changes heads as the batters overtake each other in scoring runs. 

Here are all the Orange Cap winners from IPL 2008 to IPL 2021. 


2008 - Shaun Marsh

The Australian batter Shaun Marsh entered the tournament after missing out on a few matches and still managed to score the most runs in the season - 616 runs in 11 matches. Playing for Kings XI Punjab, the left-handed batter averaged 68.44 while striking at 139.68.


2009 - Matthew Hayden

Another Australian opener, Matthew Hayden was the highest run-scorer in the 2009 season of the IPL, whipping 572 runs in 12 innings while opening for Chennai Super Kings. Hayden averaged 52 with a strike rate of 144.81.


2010 - Sachin Tendulkar

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar achieved the Orange Cap in the third season of IPL, scoring 618 runs in 15 innings while leading Mumbai Indians. Tendulkar averaged 47.53 while striking at 132.61. 


2011 - Chris Gayle 

Coming in as a replacement for injured Dirk Nannes in Royal Challengers Bangalore, Chris Gayle smacked 608 runs in 12 matches, with an impeccable average of 67.55, striking at 183.13. 


2012 - Chris Gayle

In the second consecutive season, Chris Gayle again took the Orange Cap as he smacked 733 runs in 14 matches, averaging 61.08 with a strike rate of 160.74. 


2013 - Michael Hussey 

Mr Cricket Michael Hussey won the Orange Cap in the 2013 season as he smacked 733 runs in 17 matches with a strike rate of 129.50, averaging 52.35.


2014 - Robin Uthappa

Indian wicket-keeper batter Robin Uthappa won the Orange Cap in IPL 2014, smacking 660 runs in 16 matches with an average of 44.00, striking at 137.78 while playing for Kolkata Knight Riders. 


2015 - David Warner 

Australian explosive opener David Warner won the Orange Cap in 2015 while leading Sunrisers Hyderabad. The left-handed batter smacked 562 runs in 14 matches, averaging 43.23 with a strike rate of 156.54. 


2016 - Virat Kohli 

Former RCB captain Virat Kohli was on an unreal run in the IPL 2016, smacking 973 runs in 16 matches, which is still the highest runs in a season by a batter. Kohli averaged an impeccable 81.08 with a strike rate of 152.03.


2017 - David Warner 

David Warner became the second batter to win the Orange Cap twice, as he smacked 641 runs in 14 matches with an average of 58.27, striking at 141.81. 


2018 - Kane Williamson

Kiwi captain made his mark in the IPL as he smacked 735 runs in 17 matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Williamson won the Orange Cap in IPL 2018 with an average and strike rate of 52.50 & 142.44 respectively. 


2019 - David Warner 

The Aussie opener became the first batter in history to win the Orange Cap thrice, as David Warner smacked 692 runs in just 12 matches, averaging 69.20 with a strike rate of 143.87.


2020 - KL Rahul 

Punjab Kings' captain and opener KL Rahul, smashed 670 runs in 14 matches, averaging 55.83. However, he had a low strike rate in the tournament (129.34) and his team failed to qualify for the playoffs. 


2021 - Ruturaj Gaikwad

In 2021, Ruturaj Gaikwad became the first uncapped Indian player to win the Orange Cap. The Chennai Super Kings opener smacked 635 runs in 16 matches, striking at 136.27 with an average of 45.36. Consequently, CSK also managed to win the title in 2021.
