गुरुवार को नागपुर में इंग्लैंड के खिलाफ भारत के पहले वनडे से पहले बोलते हुए, गिल ने जोर देकर कहा कि टीम ने परिणाम के बावजूद गुणवत्तापूर्ण क्रिकेट खेला और अपनी पिछली उपलब्धियों के लिए श्रेय की हकदार है।
गिल ने संवाददाताओं से कहा, "एक सीरीज पूरी टीम के फॉर्म को निर्धारित नहीं करती है। ऐसे कई खिलाड़ी हैं, जिन्होंने अतीत में विभिन्न सीरीज और टूर्नामेंट में लगातार अच्छा प्रदर्शन किया है।" उन्होंने कहा कि भारत बदकिस्मत रहा कि ब्रिसबेन में चौथे टेस्ट के आखिरी दिन स्टार पेसर जसप्रीत बुमराह उपलब्ध नहीं थे, उनका मानना है कि यह कारक श्रृंखला के परिणाम को बदल सकता था।
